West Kerry have won the opening game of the Divisional stage of the Garvey’s SuperValu County Senior Football Championship.
They defeated South Kerry 1-17 to 1-15 in Killorglin.
It was 2 all after 3 minutes, then tied at 3 apiece after 7 minutes. 12 minutes in the team could still not be separated, it was 4 all. The opening goal of the game in the 18th minute put South Kerry ahead by 1-6 to 5 points. Alex Coffey it was who netted. When South Kerry pointed after 23 minutes to open up a 5 point lead it would prove to be their final score of the period. At that stage they led 1-8 to 0-6. Two minutes from half time West Kerry goaled through Muiris O'Conaill to move within a point of their opponents. South Kerry were ahead at the break by 1-8 to 1-7.
South Kerry registered the first three points of the second period to go 4 clear at 1-11 to 1-7. West Kerry halved that deficit but with 7 minutes to go it was South Kerry: 1-13 West Kerry 1-10. West Kerry were level 2 minutes later at 1-13 apiece, then went 2 points clear with 2 minutes to go. A two pointer doubled that advantage. South Kerry had 2 late scores but got no closer than 2 in the end.
