Kerry are into the Electric Ireland All-Ireland Minor Football Championship semi-finals.
That’s after a 14 points to 1-9 victory over Cavan in Portlaoise.
Kerry led by 3 points to no score inside 8 minutes. The Kingdom added two more points before Cavan got the scoreboard after quarter of an hour. It was 6-2 after 20 minutes. Cavan were within 1, at 6 points to 5, with 90 seconds to go in the period. That was how the score stood at the break.
Kerry had the first two points of the second period but also spurned 2 goal chances. After Kerry went ahead by double scores at 10 points to 5 Cavan ate into that deficit with a goal in the 42nd minute. The Kingdom went right up the other end and nearly goaled themselves but the opportunity was well saved. A Ben Kelliher point had Kerry ahead by 0-11 to 1-5 at the 3/4 stage. The Kingdom were in front by 4 with ten minutes remaining; 0-13 to 1-6. With 4 minutes to go that gap was down to 3, and Cavan quickly put over again. It was 0-13 to 1-8 with 3 minutes left. Cavan had the next score to move within 1 with 90 seconds to go. Cavan had the chance to equalise but the effort went wide as the game entered 3 minutes of added on time. Cavan were on top but Kerry were resilient. The Kingdom weathered the storm and broke away late on for Liam O'Brien to give them a two point victory.
