Fenit Lifeboat RNLI is remembering all those who have lost their lives in Irish waters today, World Drowning Prevention Day (25 July).
The RNLI, Irish Coast Guard and Water Safety Ireland have joined together as part of this year's campaign, themed "Unite to Turn the Tide", which aims to reduce drowning by 35 per cent by 2035.
So far this year, 37 people have died in Irish waters.
The RNLI, Irish Coast Guard and Water Safety Ireland say July is on course to be one of the busiest months in many years, with warm weather bringing more people to beaches, rivers and lakes.
The Irish Coast Guard says it has coordinated more than 1,700 incidents nationwide this year, saving 385 lives and assisting more than 1,600 people.
During the second week of July alone, it dealt with 140 incidents, one of the highest weekly totals on record.
The three organisations are urging anyone planning activities on or near the water to check weather and tide conditions, wear a lifejacket where appropriate, avoid alcohol, supervise children closely, and always carry a means of calling for help.
They are urging those in an emergency in the water to dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard, or use marine VHF Channel 16.
