The principal of a West Kerry primary school is hopeful that a new playground will become a reality soon.
Malachaí Mac Amhlaoibh is the principal of Scoil Naomh Gobnait in Dún Chaoin, and a member of the local community co-op Comharchumann Dhún Chaoin.
The Office of Public Works has yet to sign a lease which would hand the site over to Kerry County Council, promised in 2021, allowing the playground to be developed.
The community has obtained planning permission, raised €40,000, secured additional funding from the LEADER programme, and appointed a contractor.
The local community co-op is now worried the LEADER funding may be lost due to the delay in the signing of the lease.
Mr Mac Amhlaoibh says he's heartened the OPW is working with the council and the Chief State Solicitor’s office to speedily sign the lease agreement:
