Weather and sea conditions hamper efforts to salvage French fishing trawler aground near Dingle

Weather and sea conditions have hampered efforts to assess a fishing trawler gone aground near Dingle.

The 14 people onboard has to rescued by the Coast Guard on Sunday when the nearly 28-metre French vessel was blown onto the rocks at Binn Bán.

The Fastnet is now stuck at the mouth of Dingle harbour, west of Dingle lighthouse.

A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine told Radio Kerry that the French trawler continues to be closely monitored.

He said the vessel is in a precarious position.

The Department of the Marine, as the designated harbour authority, and relevant agencies including Kerry County Council and other stakeholders are actively preparing to safely access the vessel.

The department says salvagers and pollution contractors will free the wreck and remove pollutants when the weather permits.
