An unannounced inspection of Killarney Nursing Home has raised concerns about staffing levels.
Two HIQA inspectors carried out an early-morning review at the Rock Road facility last June.
The inspection, which began at 6:15am, found the centre compliant with seven standards, substantially compliant with six, and non-compliant with two.
Killarney Nursing Home was found non-compliant with staffing regulations.
Residents reported delays in care at night due to busy staff, and in some cases, call bells went unanswered.
Inspectors noted that staff had to leave their assigned areas to assist others, raising concerns about the adequacy of just four staff on duty at night for 58 residents.
Simulated evacuation drills suggested that evacuation times could be too slow with such low staffing.
Management has pledged to recruit an additional healthcare assistant for night shifts to improve care and evacuation times.
A visitor also reported difficulties accessing the centre on weekends due to delays in staff answering the door. Management has committed to improving weekend visitor access.
The inspection also highlighted inadequate oversight of food and nutrition, particularly for residents needing help with meals.
In one case, a resident’s uneaten meal was incorrectly recorded as half-consumed.
Care plans for residents with nutritional needs were not always followed, with some weights not being monitored.
Management has introduced a revised food and fluid chart, along with regular weight checks and improved mealtime supervision.
