Two projects announced today have the potential to facilitate the delivery of more than 2,300 homes in Kerry.
That's according to the Department of Housing.
The projects in Tralee and Killarney have been approved under the government's new €1-billion Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF), which finances the infrastructure needed to unlock land for housing development.
It has been welcomed by Senator Mike Kennelly, Deputy Michael Cahill, Deputy Michael Healy Rae, and Minister Norma Foley.
The Housing Activation Office approved 82 of the 138 applications received nationwide under the fund's first call.
The department says the projects could support the delivery of up to 200,000 homes across the country.
Two of the successful projects are in Kerry.
The Killarney project involves a new road linking the N22 Killarney Bypass with the R876 Park Road.
The scheme is estimated to cost between €10 million and €20 million and would make possible the direct development of 500 homes, while indirectly supporting a further 581 homes.
NTA funding for active travel projects and Department of Transport investment in the Killarney Strategic Link Roads will complement the project.
ESB Networks also plans to upgrade the local 38kV electricity network.
Meanwhile, the Tralee project includes a new distributor road at Lohercannon, upgrades to the L6715 Ashgrove Road, and a new link road connecting the two.
The project is expected to cost less than €10 million, with €2.74 million approved in funding this year.
The Department of Housing says it will directly facilitate the delivery of 450 homes and indirectly support a further 788 homes.
It complements the Tralee Northern Relief Road project and planned upgrades to the local ESB electricity network.
The department says it expects the Tralee scheme to be substantially completed by the end of 2027 or early 2028.
