Tralee Taxi Association (TTA) has aired its concerns at the CCPC’s Attitude to Taxi Services report.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has suggested that ride-hailing services, like Uber, should be allowed, but regulated.
The research says 57% of people think there aren’t enough taxi’s available in their area, while 49% would like ride-hailing services.
Responding to the report, the TTA claim the survey presents a one-sided narrative that risks undermining a regulated industry.
It says the omission of surge pricing in the survey was striking, and raised passenger safety and garda vetting concerns.
The TTA states rural Ireland can’t be an afterthought and called for full rigorous examination of surge-based systems.
