Tralee SIPTU rep calls for move away from reliance on private sector for housing

There is an over-reliance on the private sector to provide housing when local authorities should be funded to do so.

That’s the view of SIPTU Sector Organiser Con Casey, who’s from Tralee.

SIPTU representatives have condemned what they call the failure of the government to properly staff and resource local authorities, leading to 123 publicly-owned houses lying vacant in Kerry as of 23rd May this year.

SIPTU will take part in the Raise the Roof protest in Cork City on Saturday at 2pm, to highlight the housing emergency.

Con Casey says properly funding and staffing local authorities to maintain housing would benefit society.
