Students from the Kerry College's Journalism, Podcasting and Radio class of 2024 received 5 nominations for this year's National Student Media Awards.
Also known as the SMEDIAS, the event is an All-Ireland student journalism competition run by Oxygen.ie.
The National Student Media Awards celebrates student journalism across 25 distinct categories, from print to radio and digital media.
This year, the class of 2024 at Kerry College's Journalism, Radio and Podcasting received 5 nominations over three different categories.
Cian Doherty received a nomination for the Radio Production of the Year – Arts & Features category for his piece
"Spa to the States", which documents the series of football matches played by Spa GAA in the US in 1978.
Mikey Whelan was nominated in the Best Documentary category for “The Day Campile Was Bombed”, which focuses on the Luftwaffe bombing of the Wexford town in 1940.
Eimear Nagle was recognised in the same category for "Gaelic 4 Mothers and Others”,exploring the formation and impact of Rathmore’s Gaelic 4 Mothers and Others team and its benefit to women in the community.
Siobhan Brosnan received two nominations. The first was in the Best Documentary category for "Writing to Freedom", an in-depth look into the Prison Writing Competition at the Listowel Writers Week Festival.
Her second nomination was in the Radio Production- News and Current Affairs category, for her report on the severe flooding in Listowel and Killocrim as a result of Storm Bert.
University of Limerick and Radio Kerry's Emma McCarthy was nominated in the Journalism Related to Health category for her articles on the University Hospital Limerick trolley crisis in the Limerick Voice.
The awards will take place on Wednesday April 9th at the Mansion House in Dublin.
