Burglary, theft and weapons crimes increased in the Southern Garda region between July and September last year.
That’s according to the CSO’s Regional Crime report for the third quarter of 2024, which show over 41,000 (41,789) crimes were recorded in the area in the region.
The report shows during the third quarter of last year, the Southern region recorded the largest rate of increase in burglary and related offences, at 23%.
The Southern region covers Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Clare and Tipperary.
1,833 burglary and related offences were recorded between July and September, up from 1,488 on the same period last year.
There was a 9% rise in theft and related offences, with over 13,900 (13,902) incidents recorded.
Weapons and explosives offences increased by 13%, from 554 in the third quarter of 2023 to 626 over the same period last year.
Controlled drug crimes fell in the region by 11% in the space of a year, falling from 3,810 in 2023 to 3,380 in the same period the following year.
Robbery, extortion and hijacking offences dropped by 14% in the third quarter of last year; while public order; and kidnapping and related incidents, both fell by 6%.
Meanwhile, decreases were recorded during the period in attempts/threats to kill and assaults (2%), homicide (4%), sexual offences (2%), dangerous or negligent acts (3%), damage to property (1%), and Offences against Government, Justice Procedures & Organisation of Crime (7%).dio
