Six months sentence for man accused with arson and burglary

A Farranfore man who committed arson and burglary at his parents' premises has received a six month prison sentence.

Brian Daly of Currans Farranfore, admitted to setting two vehicles on fire and burglary on May 3rd.

Judge Catherine Staines told Tralee Circuit Court that this case highlights the destructive nature of the abuse of alcohol.

26-year-old Brian Daly, who has admitted to substance abuse, pleaded guilty to three counts of arson and one count of burglary at Riverside Inn, Currans, Farranfore.

On May 3rd, he entered his parents' premises without consent, caused damage by fire to two vehicles and a storage container.

He took a double barrel shotgun and removed it from the premises before barricading himself inside.

The court previously heard how Mr Daly had stopped taking medication for his mental health condition.

He was handed a three year sentence for all four counts, to run concurrently, with the last two and a half years suspended.

Judge Staines said the mitigating factors included Mr Daly’s guilty plea and his mental health difficulties.

She ordered that he be released from prison when a space at a residential treatment facility becomes available for him.

The sentence will be backdated to the date he entered into Garda custody on May 4ths.
