A Kerry Fine Gael senator says the introduction of a controversial register for Airbnbs and other short-term lets has been delayed.
In April last year, the government approved the Short-Term Letting and Tourism Bill General Scheme.
Under the Short-term letting register accommodation hosts offering 21 nights or fewer must register their properties with Fáilte Ireland.
The restrictions only apply to towns with populations of over 20,000, which would include Tralee, following a U-turn in February.
The short-term lets register was due to come into effect from May 20th.
However, Fine Gael Senator Mike Kennelly has told Radio Kerry that this has been deferred until December 1st.
Senator Kennelly who's from Listowel says clarity is needed on the scheme before the register is opened.
Responding to Radio Kerry, Fáilte Ireland says that the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment are best placed to respond to this.
In response to a query from Radio Kerry, the Department for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment and Department for Housing, Local Government and Heritage have confirmed that the Short-term let Register will come into effect from December 1 2026, with all operators having a legal obligation to register by 31 December 2026.
