MEP Seán Kelly says it’s very disappointing that he wasn’t given the chance to go before the Fine Gael party to try and get his name on the ballot for the Presidential election.
The Kilcummin man withdrew from the contest to become the Fine Gael presidential candidate yesterday evening.
He said it was clear he wouldn’t be able to get the necessary 20 nominations in the parliamentary party.
In Fine Gael you need 35% of the parliamentary party to make it a contest; in comparison in Fianna Fáil you just need the support of 5% of the parliament party for a contest.
