Kerry MEP Seán Kelly says the Fine Gael members will appreciate the opportunity to have their say, with a contest now underway for the party’s presidential nomination.
The Ireland South MEP, who’s from Kilcummin, this morning confirmed he is to seek his party’s nomination to run for president.
Former Minister Heather Humphreys, who had retired from politics last year, has now confirmed she also seeks to secure Fine Gael’s nomination.
After former EU Commissioner Mairead McGuinness withdrew from the race for health reasons, Fine Gael re-opened nominations, which will close on September 2nd.
MEP Seán Kelly had previously ruled himself out, but says in the meantime, he got the opportunity to get people’s views and had received a lot of support.
The Kerry MEP says it’s good for Fine Gael to have a contest for such a coveted position.
