Enjoy this St Patrick’s weekend, but it is our responsibility to keep our roads safe.
That was the message at the launch of An Garda Síochána’s bank holiday road safety appeal in Killarney today.
Three people have died on Kerry’s roads so far in 2026.
The launch took place at Kerry County Council’s national Safer Roads conference, which got underway this morning and will run until tomorrow afternoon.
The appeal was launched by Assistant Commissioner for Roads Policing with An Garda Síochána, Catharina Gunne, Minister of State at the Department of Transport Jerry Buttimer, and Michael Rowland of the Road Safety Authority.
They advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance of the weekend.
Road users were also urged not to speed, to wear their seatbelts, and to leave their keys at home if they plan to drink or take drugs.
There was a strong focus on pedestrians.
So far this year, of the 32 people who have died on roads nationally, 10 were pedestrians.
They are being advised not to walk on unlit roads, particularly while under the influence of intoxicants.
