A transition year student from Presentation Secondary School Milltown has won the Mary Elmes Prize for Holocaust Studies.

17-year-old Esther Tyther from Farnes, Castlemaine claimed first place in the literature category.

Her original piece was entitled 'The Haunting Whispers of Life and Death'.

Ms Tyther will now be one of the youth readers at the National Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration at the Mansion House next January.

The award is named for Mary Elmes; the first Irish person to be acknowledged (posthumously) as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, an award bestowed on non-Jewish people who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.

Ms Tyther recently had another work published in "Quarks: Open Your Eyes Shut" as part of the Edna O’Brien Young Writers Award.
