A Portuguese man is to plead guilty to attempting to carry a 3D-printed knife onto a flight from Kerry Airport.
The man will have his court case dealt with by the district court, after Judge David Waters accepted jurisdiction.
25-year-old Bruno Miguel Rodrigues, of 9 Rua de Feideirinha, Coimbra, Portugal, faces one count of possession of a knife which had a blade or which was sharply pointed, on 4th October last year at Kerry Airport.
Judge David Waters asked for an outline of the facts to see whether he would accept jurisdiction in the case, or refer it to a higher court.
Sergeant Chris Manton said Mr Rodrigues was going to board a flight from Kerry Airport in Farranfore on 4th October last year, and went through the security scanner which flagged an issue.
Staff then went to pat him down and discovered a knife on his person.
Sgt Manton said the knife was 3D-printed, to which Judge Waters replied, “How times have changed”.
Sgt Manton confirmed the 3D-printed knife was made of blue plastic.
He also confirmed that the man was flying to Dublin rather than flying abroad.
Mr Rodrigues’ solicitor Brendan Ahern said his client has gone back to Portugal, but he will definitely be pleading guilty.
Judge Waters accepted jurisdiction, and adjourned the case to 13th May for sentence.
