People advised to clean fridges/freezers and throw out any potentially contaminated food over listeria outbreak

People are being advised to clean fridges and freezers, and throw out any old food that may have been contaminated by listeria.

Investigations are ongoing following the death of one adult with a confirmed case of listeriosis in Ireland.

9 other cases of the infection have been confirmed amid an "extensive outbreak" of listeria at Ballymaguire Foods - which produces ready meals for Tesco, Supervalu, Centra and Aldi.

The Food Safety Authority has recalled over 200 types of ready-made meals, and a full list of affected products is available on its website.

Triona O’Brien, Teagasc research officer on food safety, dairy, and microbiology, says washing hands and regularly cleaning fridges and freezers will help contain any potential spread of the bacteria.
