People across Kerry asked to share their Northern Lights photos for citizen science research project

Residents in Kerry are being encouraged to share their photos of the Northern Lights to help build Ireland’s largest ever archive of aurora images

Researchers from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) are particularly interested in Kerry’s dark-sky locations.

The Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve, covers a large area of the Iveragh Peninsula and includes towns like Waterville, Cahersiveen, and Valentia Island as well as Derrynane Beach, Staigue Fort, and areas around Sneem.

In May and October 2024, the Northern Lights were visible across the island of Ireland, and were heavily documented by many people in Kerry.

The DIAS are now asking for people to share these images as part a of a citizen science research project.
