The Part 8 Planning process for the new teen hangout space in Killarney will not be going ahead until other locations have been assessed for suitability.
That was the decision of members of Killarney Municipal District at a recent meeting.
In June it was announced that €50,000 would be allocated to Kerry County Council to develop the Killarney Teen Hangout space on the Park Road.
The project includes an outdoor ‘hangout’ shelter, sheltered seating area, integrated Bluetooth speakers, outdoor exercise units, boxup outdoor locker and bike racks.
The funding was announced by Kerry Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for Children Norma Foley.
It was hoped that the project would begin the Part 8 Planning process in the coming weeks, however several councillors raised their concerns about the location, as well as the lack of communication with council members.
The issue was raised by Cllr. Marie Moloney, said residents in the area have raised concerns with her regarding the proposed outdoor shelters and the potential for late night noise and possible anti social behaviour.
She says that while Comhairle na nÓg was consulted on the location, council members were "blindsided" and should have been included in the consultations, particularly as there are many elderly residents in the immediate area.
Looking at the lack of teen facilities in the area, Cllr. Niall Kelleher says that everything should be done to adresss the issue.
Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District Martin O'Grady agrees that youth amenities are needed and welcomes the funding for a dedicated teen space.
However, he agrees that the Part 8 process should be delayed to assess more suitable locations.
As the funding cannot be re-allocated for other purposes, it is pertinant that another location is agreed on for a designated space for teenagers.
Similarly Cllr. Brendan Cronin feels that there will be overwhelming objections from locals, and that an assessment of possible locations needs to be carried out and presented to councillors.
Cllr. John O'Donoghue agreed that a lot more work has to be done before moving to Part 8 Planning, and that the 6 to 8 houses in the area need to been included in discussions.
Cllr. Niall O'Callaghan agrees that other locations could be suitable and that it may be appropriate to liase with KCYS on suitable areas.
