Funding of over €5 million has been announced to adapt houses for people with disabilities and the elderly in Kerry.
This year increased funding was allocated to Kerry under the Housing Adaptation Grant.
The funding announcement has been welcomed by Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae, Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae, Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill, Minister for Disabilities Norma Foley and Fine Gael Senator Mike Kennelly.
The Department of Housing has increased Kerry County Council’s allocation for the scheme from €3.5 million last year to €4.3 million this year. Kerry County Council will provide a further €809,000 from its own funds, bringing the total funding this year to €5,397,147.
This grant will allow Kerry County Council to support people to continue to live independently in their own homes; it allows people to carry out necessary works to make a house more suitable for their needs.
This is part of a €129.5 million in exchequer funding, and it will deliver around 17,000 grant claims.
Under the scheme, grants of up to €40,000 are available to assist disabled people in carrying out the necessary work to make a home more suitable for their needs.
Additionally, grants of up to €10,700 are available to assist older people to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out on their homes and grants of up to €8,000 are available for mobility aids.
