Over €13 million in funding has been allocated to active travel projects in Kerry.
The funding announced by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, will go towards cycling and walking facilities all over the county.
€9.2 million will go towards the South Kerry Greenway, which is currently under construction.
A 3km stretch of the greenway opened before Christmas at Kells.
Half a million euro has been allocated to link up the Tralee and Listowel greenways.
€900,000 has been announced for a new cycleway at Park Road in Killarney and €650,000 for a new cycleway on the Bracker O’Regan Road in Tralee.
€420,000 has been allocated for a cycleway, traffic crossing, and traffic calming interventions in Tralee.
A further €500,000 has been announced to upgrade bus stops in the county.
Among the other funding allocations in Kerry, are 13 schools which will receive funding for safe routes to school.
These include allocations of €120,000 for Intermediate School Killorglin, €50,000 for Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk, and €15,000 for CBS Primary in Tralee.
Moyderwell Primary, Sacred Heart Primary and Presentation Secondary School, all in Tralee, have been allocated €5,000 each for safe routes to school.
National schools in Castledrum, Coolick, Cullina, Glounaguillagh, St Joseph’s in Castlemaine, St Joseph’s in Ballyheigue, and Presentation Primary in Listowel will all also receive €5,000.
The active travel funding has been welcomed by Kerry TDs Norma Foley, Michael Cahill, Michael Healy-Rae, and Senator Mike Kennelly.
