One crewman dies and other critically injured in accident on fishing vessel off Valentia coast

One man has died and another is believed to be in a serious condition, following an incident on a fishing boat off Valentia coast earlier today.

The air lifting of the injured man - in very challenging sea conditions - involved two helicopters and a fixed wing plane.

The alarm was raised this morning when Valentia Coastguard was alerted by its counterpart in Madrid, and told that two men had been injured on a Spanish fishing vessel.

The injuries were sustained when a rope snapped on board their boat, the Nobo Alborada.

The vessel was around 31 nautical miles off the coast of Kerry , and continued to travel in towards Dingle after the accident.

A man in his thirties died on board the vessel before the Coast Guard fixed-wing plane and two Coast Guard helicopters could arrive.

The other man was brought to Cork University Hospital (CUH) in critical condition.

John Draper from the Irish Coast Guard, says the injured crewman was very lucky to have been rescued on time.

Arrangements are being made to transfer the body of the deceased man to Castletownbere.
