The number of Mandatory Intoxication Testing (MIT) Checkpoints carried out by Gardaí in the county last year fell by almost 30% when compared to the previous year.
That's according to Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, who is calling on Garda management for clarification on the decrease in numbers.
Figures show that the number of Mandatory Intoxication Testing Checkpoints on Kerry roads fell from 865 to 615 between 2024 and 2015, a decrease of 28.9%.
Ní Mhurchú, a member of the EU Transport committee, has made it clear that Garda management should be dramatically increasing the number of Mandatory Intoxication Testing (MIT) Checkpoints on our roads, not decreasing them.
The Fianna Fáil MEP cites a 37% increase nationally in drug driving cases before district courts in the first 10 months of last year as concrete evidence for Gardaí to launch a massive increase in drug and drink driving checkpoints
