The Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley has announced a revised Mileage Payment Scheme for foster carers.
Kerry's Fianna Fail TD says foster parents who incur extra travel expenses due to their fostering responsibilities will benefit from the scheme.
The scheme expands the types of journeys foster carers may be able to claim for including trips to educational events, extracurricular classes, training sessions, extra medical or therapeutic appointments, and access visits — all linked to the child’s care plan.
The weekly cumulative travel distance to qualify for the allowance has also been reduced from 300km to 250km.
