New upgrade strengthens electricity supply capacity in Kerry

ESB Networks has connected the second of two new higher-capacity transformers at the Woodford Station in Killarney.

Ireland’s electricity network operator says the increased capacity will help meet growing demand for electricity across Kerry.

The upgrade increases the 38 kilovolt (kV) substation’s capacity from two 10 MVA transformers to two 18.75 MVA transformers.

Transformers receive high-voltage electricity from the electricity network, reduce the voltage for local distribution, and enable electricity to be supplied safely and efficiently to homes, businesses and other customers.

Located on the outskirts of Killarney, the Woodford 38 kV Station will now deliver an additional 17.5 MVA of installed transformer capacity.

ESB Networks says that's enough to support approximately 4,500 homes, including the increased electricity demand associated with heat pumps and electric vehicles.

The semi-state company says the project will enable more residential, commercial and industrial developments to connect to the electricity network, supporting housing delivery, economic growth and local communities across Kerry.

By increasing the capacity of the existing network, ESB Networks claims it is helping customers connect sooner while preparing the electricity network for increased demand as Ireland attempts to meet its low-carbon goals.

The project is part of ESB Networks’ wider Price Review 6 (PR6) investment programme.
