Minor improvements are required at two Kerry nursing homes.

Unannounced inspections carried out by HIQA at St Louis Nursing Home and Sonas Nursing Home Ashborough, found that both were compliant with most regulations.

Inspectors noted both were pleasant places to live for residents, but improvements were required in some areas.

An unannounced inspection was carried out at St Louis Nursing Home in Tralee on the 10th of March this year.

The inspector noted the centre was a pleasant place to live and residents were offered choice in how they led their lives.

Feedback from residents was that the staff were very kind and caring, and residents felt safe in the centre.

The centre was at least substantially compliant with all but one HIQA regulation, and improvements were required in training and staff development, medication management and managing behaviours that challenge.

The inspector's report also stated improvements were required in infection prevention and control practices, as well as fire precautions.

HIQA also conducted an unannounced inspection at Sonas Nursing Home Ashborough in Milltown on April 7th.

The inspector stated it was a well-run and governed centre, which ensured residents received a high standard of safe, quality care.

However, some residents found the days long and said there wasn't much to do.

Sonas Nursing Home was also found to be compliant with all but one HIQA regulation.

The report noted the centre required improvement in the activities programme for residents, fire precautions and end of life care plans.
