Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae doesn’t believe the means test for carers will be abolished by October’s budget, but believes some progress will be made.

He is one of a number of Independent ministers that are calling on Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to prioritise abolishing the carer’s means test in Budget 2026.

From Thursday, the income disregard will rise from €450 to €625 for single people and from €900 to €1,250 for couples; this is a measure that was announced in the budget last year.
