A Kerry TD has described any possible plans to replace the chapel at UHK with a ward as an attack on religion.
Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae was responding to proposed plans at University Hospital Kerry, to put a six-bed facility in this location.
He understands there has been discussions within the HSE to remove the existing chapel from the Tralee hospital.
Minister of State Healy-Rae states another facility within the hospital has been suggested, but this would not be sufficient.
He says the hospital requires more bed space, however, he would be vehemently against replacing the chapel.
In response, HSE South West says there are no plans to remove the chapel at University Hospital Kerry.
It says a development control plan is being undertaken for the future development of UHK's campus.
The HSE says no decisions have been made in relation to particular buildings on campus pending the completion of this plan.
It says any future redevelopment will be carefully planned and will be fully cognisant of the hospital's needs as well as those of staff, patients, visitors and the community.
