Minister for OPW hits back at criticism over delays on short-term flood mitigation works in Listowel

The Minister with the Responsibility for the Office of Public Works has hit back at criticism of the OPW for delays to short-term flood mitigation works in Listowel.

Independent TD Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran was responding in the Seanad to Kerry Fine Gael Senator Mike Kennelly, who said people in Listowel are living in fear of another heavy rain event.

At the recent Listowel MD meeting, councillors expressed frustration that short-term flood mitigation works in Listowel and Killocrim, due to begin in March, have not yet started.

Councillors said the OPW had disrespected, and failed to communicate, with residents.

The response from the council was that consultants are carrying out an assessment for the works, and this will then be discussed with the OPW to secure funding.

Senator Mike Kennelly called on the Minister with responsibility for the Office of Public Works to clarify when these short-term works will start.

Minister of State, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran said he wants to work with the council and locals, and he’s made the delivery of flood relief in Listowel a top priority.
