A formal state ceremony is underway in South Kerry to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O’Connell.
The 19th-century Kerry-born politician led the campaign for Catholic emancipation and is remembered as one of Ireland’s most influential political figures.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has been giving a keynote address at Derrynane House near Cahersiveen.
Other speakers have included Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council Michael Foley and Minister of State Kevin “Boxer” Moran.
Minister for Culture Patrick O’Donovan said Daniel O'Connell's influence was global.
