The Minister for Agriculture says retaining Ireland’s nitrates derogation is his top priority, and it must come with conditions that are workable for farmers.

Minister Martin Heydon was speaking on a visit to Kerry today, where he will meet with local farmers, among other engagements.

European Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall, visited Ireland late last week and met with derogation farmers, industry representatives, and politicians.

Minister Heydon says he and farmers are making a good case to keep the derogation beyond this year, as farming practices are helping to reduce emissions.

He said negotiations are ongoing on what conditions may come with the retention of the derogation.

A nationwide housing order for poultry has come into effect today.

Minister Heydon also appealed to owners of backyard flocks to register with the Department of Agriculture, and to take steps to improve bio-security.
