A minister has not disagreed with a claim that reducing the rate of LPT will affect projects in Kerry.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council Fianna Fáil councillor Jimmy Moloney said funding applications for projects in Listowel and Killorglin will be scaled back as a result of the vote on Local Property Tax on Monday.

A 15% increase on the base rate was sought by the council, but half this increase was approved.

In relation to the cathaoirleach’s comment, Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys says local authorities commit to major projects by giving matched funding or a percentage of costs.

She adds individual projects are a matter for councils.

Three Listowel MD Fine Gael councillors – Mike Kennelly, Aoife Thornton and Michael Foley – voted against any increase in the LPT.

Minister Heather Humphreys, who’s a member of Fine Gael, was asked if she was disappointed about this.
