The Mayor of Tralee says the closure of BorgWarner is a huge blow to the county.

The manufacturing plant has been operating in Tralee for 30 years.

BorgWarner, which is based in Monavalley, will close at the end of next March with the loss of more than 200 jobs.

Fine Gael TD and Government Deputy Chief Whip Brendan Griffin says the news is a terrible shock to all employees and their families.

The Kerry TD has spoken with Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, who is going to engage with the company this evening.

The decision to close the Tralee plant was made due to a drop in demand for products made at the factory, a spokesperson said; BorgWarner makes air heaters for the automotive industry.

The spokesperson added that COVID-19 was not a factor in the decision.

Two hundred and ten people jobs will be lost and Managing Director of the Tralee plant, Anton Diaz says today is a difficult day for everyone at BorgWarner Tralee.

Mayor of Tralee and Labour Cllr Terry O’Brien says BorgWarner was a great employer in the town.

He says news of the closure comes as a shock, adding it’s a big blow for the staff.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly has also expressed his disappointment following the announcement that BorgWarner is to close in Tralee.

Deputy Daly says every effort must be made to support the workers and their families and ensure they receive a fair redundancy package as well as retraining for future employment opportunities.
