The Mayor of Kerry says a grant should be developed for people looking to downsize homes.
Cllr Breandán Fitzgearld raised the motion at the recent Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District meeting.
He says in many parts of the county there are homes where the owners are getting older and their families have left the house.
The Fianna Fáil councillor believes in such cases a grant should be available for the home owners to split the house and develop an apartment within the property.
His motion to write to the Department of Housing to develop such a scheme was seconded by Cllr Fionnán Fitzgerald.
