A man has been refused bail accused of smashing up a house and committing assaults in North Kerry at the weekend.
37-year-old Dan McCarthy of 46 Castleview Estate, Newcastle West, appeared in Tralee District Court yesterday for a bail application.
He faces ten charges all arising from incidents at an estate in Moyvane last Saturday.
It’s alleged Mr McCarthy entered a house in Moyvane at 8pm on Saturday, and then caused significant damage to the house; specifically, the front door, back patio door, five windows, toilet, sink, refrigerator, dishwasher, 50-inch television, and venetian blinds.
The court was told gardaí believe he was looking for someone at this address, and that man’s mother and young child live at the home he’s alleged to have burgled.
He’s further accused of criminal damage to two cars in the same estate.
It’s also alleged Mr McCarthy produced a slash hook while committing these alleged offences.
Mr McCarthy is also accused of assaulting a man and a woman at the same estate in Moyvane, and of demanding money from the woman.
He faces one charge of unlawfully taking the vehicle belonging to the woman on the same date in Moyvane.
Gardaí objected to bail due to the nature and strength of their evidence, and their belief he would commit serious offences if released on bail.
Detective Garda Shane O’Driscoll said there were no conditions that could be attached to bail that would alleviate his concerns.
Mr McCarthy’s solicitor Pat Mann submitted his client is a full-time carer for his father, and his family can offer up to €5,000 to the court.
Mr McCarthy told the court he would be willing to stay out of North Kerry if granted bail.
Judge David Waters refused bail, and said it was never addressed why Mr McCarthy was allegedly in Kerry while supposed to be caring for his father.
