A man is alleged to have carried out a late-night burglary from a house in Tralee this week, while a pensioner was in the house with her grandson.
41-year-old Jamie Norman, of 42 Lios Rua, Tralee, appeared in Tralee District Court accused of stealing phones and a handbag from the house on Spa Road.
He was denied bail by Judge Treasa Kelly.
Jamie Norman is accused of entering a house on Spa Road in Tralee late into Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, at around half past midnight.
He’s alleged to have stolen a grey handbag, two mobile phones, a power bank, and a scissors from the house.
The court was told the house was occupied at the time by a woman in her 70s, and her 25-year-old grandson.
Mr Norman is also accused of stealing a Tommy Hilfiger wallet containing bank cards and various IDs from a car outside the same house on Spa Road.
He also faces a charge of possession of stolen property; the court heard he was arrested close to the scene, in possession of the items he’s alleged to have stolen.
Mr Norman’s solicitor Pádraig O’Connell applied for bail for his client, and the state objected.
Garda Claire Dennehy outlined that gardaí are concerned he would not turn up to court to face the charges if granted bail.
Gardaí also objected due to the seriousness of the charges, and the strength of the evidence they have against him in this case.
Mr O’Connell asked Judge Kelly to admit him to bail with very strict conditions, as his client has a presumption of innocence and a presumption in favour of bail.
Judge Kelly said she is not satisfied there are conditions that would satisfy the court to allow Mr Norman bail, and she remanded him in custody.
Mr O’Connell said there will be an application for bail in the High Court.
Mr Norman will next appear in court next Wednesday, via video link from prison.
