Listowel Writers’ Week has crowned its Irish Novel of the Year at the festival’s opening night.

Aingeala Flannery scooped the Kerry Group-sponsored award, along with the €20,000 prize, for her debut novel, The Amusements, published by SANDYCOVE, Penguin Random House.

The Pigott Poetry Prize of €12,000 was awarded to Tom French for his book Company, published by Gallery Books.

The Pigott prize is for a single volume of poetry and is sponsored each year by Mark Pigott, whose family emigrated to the United States from Listowel in the late 1890s.

The John B. Keane Lifetime Achievement Award was also presented to Oscar-nominated actor Stephen Rea at the awards ceremony, which took place in the ballroom of the Listowel Arms Hotel.
