Kerry County Council has been urged to examine developing lands for the creation of a North Kerry sports centre of excellence.
It follows a motion from Fine Gael councillor Aoife Kennelly at the recent meeting of Listowel Municipal District.
She asked the council to explore the possibilities of providing a community-based facility, including 5G and astro-turf pitches, in Listowel for sports clubs in the area.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Kennelly noted that sports clubs in the Listowel MD are completely stretched for pitches and facilities.
She said looking at the recent bad weather and with winter incoming, this demand for pitches and floodlights will only increase.
Cllr Kennelly urged the council to explore the feasibility in making this a pilot programme for the region, which other areas in the county and country could follow.
She believes this would make a huge difference to the local community and sports clubs, but would also attract national events and youth development squads to the area.
The motion was seconded by Cllr Michael Foley, who said there’s no reason why a centre of excellence similar to that in Currans, couldn’t be developed in the North Kerry region.
He added sports clubs are struggling with facilities and this could be a game changer.
Sinn Féin councillor Tom Barry backed the motion, noting that rugby and athletic clubs are anxious to meet with the council and this could be a suitable approach.
In response Kerry County Council said it actively engages with sporting clubs wishing to develop new recreation facilities and encouraged potential groups involved to liaise with their local Municipal District.
