Listowel councillor says housing bodies must be held to account over antisocial behaviour

A Listowel councillor says Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) must be held to account over how they deal with antisocial behaviour.

Sinn Féin councillor Tom Barry told a recent full council meeting that when he raises antisocial behaviour concerns on behalf of AHB tenants, he is often ignored.

Cllr Tom Barry said he understands that once tenants move into Approved Housing Body housing, they are no longer under the direct remit of Kerry County Council.

However, he said that in future housing developments involving AHBs, the council should insist on strong antisocial behaviour measures before any agreements are finalised.

Cllr Barry acknowledged that the Kerry County Council’s own policies need improvement, but said at least it can be contacted, and will respond to tenants.

He added that Approved Housing Bodies should do more to support their tenants affected by antisocial behaviour.

Kerry County Council’s Director of Housing, Niamh O’Sullivan, said she will raise the issue with AHBs at an upcoming routine forum and outline Cllr Barry’s concerns.
