Listowel Community Hospital has received a broadly positive report from the national healthcare watchdog.
The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) inspected the rehabilitation and community inpatient (RCIHS) facility against the National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare.
The two-day announced inspection took place in April.
Listowel Community Hospital is operated by the HSE.
The unit was deemed compliant with seven of eleven national standards, and substantially compliant with the remaining four.
Inspectors stated that patients and relatives were very complimentary about the staff and care at Listowel Community Hospital, with patients reportedly saying they get ‘help with everything’, and are ‘very well looked after’, while a family member described the facility as ‘top class’.
The unit’s arrangements to identify opportunities to improve services were deemed satisfactory.
However, HIQA told the hospital to develop quality improvement plans (QIPs) when incidents are reported, and to share learnings with staff following incidents.
The inspectors were satisfied with the unit’s governance arrangements, but stated improvements were required to ensure tasks were time-bound and were assigned to specific individuals.
The hospital was also substantially compliant when gathering and analysing information to improve services.
The inspectors told the unit to update training on medication safety, and to ensure all patients have an ID band in place.
