Killorglin woman whose husband was killed by drunk hit-and-run driver urges people to lobby TDs to change sentencing laws

A Killorglin woman whose husband was killed by a drunk hit-and-run driver has asked people to contact TDs to change sentencing laws.

Jackie Murphy's husband Patrick was killed while cycling on September 3rd, 2023 shortly after leaving their home in Tullig, Killorglin.

Jackie Murphy said prison sentences should be longer for anyone who kills someone on the road, with a minimum of 14 years for anyone who flees the scene after hitting someone.

She says sentences should be higher for drunk and drug drivers.

Her husband, 68-year-old Patrick ‘Elvis’ Murphy, was killed when he had been out for a cycle on the morning of 3rd September 2023.

In March last year, Jade Moriarty of Muingaphuca, Killorglin was sentenced to four years and eight months for dangerous driving causing his death.

The judge, was bound by law to give a significant discount for her early guilty plea, and her lack of previous convictions was also a mitigating factor.

Jackie Murphy says tougher sentencing is needed, and urged TDs not to wait until they experience such a loss to act to change the laws.
