A school and a business, both based in Killorglin, are being congratulated for delivering programmes that build children’s confidence in reading and maths.
Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI) has commended Fexco and Glounaguillagh National School for working together to deliver the programmes for over a decade.
The Time to Read programme pairs second-class children with local corporate volunteers for one-to-one reading support.
The Time to Count programme allows volunteers to work with third-class pupils to build confidence around numbers and reinforce mathematical problem-solving.
Over the past ten years, Fexco has had 97 volunteers participate, and they report that the programme was a valuable experience.
Both programmes include a workplace visit, giving pupils an opportunity to learn about the world of work.
Glounaguillagh National School, established in 1887, is a six-teacher school in Caragh Lake, serving 145 children with a focus on supporting individual growth and nurturing a love for learning.
BITCI Head of Education, Andrea Lazenby Simpson, praised Fexco for their commitment, saying the programmes lead to better academic performance and improved self-esteem for students.
Principal of Glounaguillagh National School, Sinead Pigott, explained that the programmes complement their focus on social-emotional learning, helping students build confidence and resilience.
She expressed gratitude to Fexco and BITCI for their ongoing support and the positive impact on their students.
Paula O’Sullivan, Fexco Group HR Director, celebrated the decade-long partnership, highlighting the positive impact on students and the community.
The Time to Read programme is funded by An Post and Community Foundation Ireland.
