Close to 200 people have joined the Irish Deer Commission in Killarney today for the organisation’s annual red deer rut watch.

The breeding season for wild deer is known as the ‘rut’ and involves stags roaring out to their competitors and battling with them for the right to mate with does.

The event got underway at a location in Killarney National Park at 9am and is co-hosted by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

The Irish Deer Commission says it’s delighted with the numbers who’ve registered online to watch a spectacle that has taken place in Kerry for more than 5,000 years.
