A Killarney resident who’s been charged with escaping from custody says he'll be killed if he has to return to Egypt.
Ahmed Ibrahim of The Cooperage, Bohereencael, is facing deportation.
The 34-year-old was charged yesterday with escaping from custody while he was being taken into prison.
Ahmed Ibrahim said he will be killed if he returns to Egypt because he is gay.
This was one of the replies the defendant gave when he was formally arrested and charged by Detective Sergeant Ernie Henderson.
The Irish Examiner reports that Detective Sergeant Henderson gave evidence at Cork District Court of Mr Ibrahim stating this after he was cautioned in relation to the charge of escaping from lawful custody when he was being taken into Cork Prison on January 15th.
He was also charged with obstructing a member of An Garda Síochána during his alleged escape in January.
Mr Ibrahim was arrested in County Wexford last month and brought before a special sitting of Cork District Court on February 21st when he was charged with assault causing harm to Garda Marian McCarthy at Cork Prison on January 15th, allegedly arising out of the same incident.
Det Sgt Henderson said it was anticipated that the garda file would be ready to go to the Director of Public Prosecutions in one week.
Judge Mary Dorgan remanded Ahmed Ibrahim in custody until April 1st.
