A cuckoo who summers in Killarney National Park is on track to arrive back in the Kingdom on schedule.

The male cuckoo, called Cuach Cores, was first tagged in the park in May 2023, and has spent three summers in Derrycunnihy Woodland.

The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), in partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) recorded him in western France on Saturday.

He spent four winter months in the Congolese forests, before undertaking an epic 9000 kilometre journey through Africa, the Mediterranean Sea, Spain and the Bay of Biscay.

Cores is currently on the outskirts of the town of Villeneuve-en-Retz.

He is now poised to head north straight into Ireland in the coming days.

Last year he arrived in Kerry on the 22nd April.
