The Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District believes major upgrades need to be made along the entire N22 road.
Independent councillor Martin Grady says over 20,000 cars travel along this route each day, while over 300 crashes and 20 deaths have been recorded in the past two decades.
He highlighted the junction at Loo Bridge, which links the N22 with the R569 Kilgarvan-Kenmare road as a concern.
Cllr Grady says the speed limit at this junction, which is 100 km/h, needs to be reduced.
