A Killarney sports club claims people have made a sport of running along the clubhouse roof.

Members of Killarney Celtic soccer club spoke at the Killarney Municipal District meeting to highlight anti-social behaviour at their grounds on the outskirts of the town.

Independent councillor Niall Botty O'Callaghan and Fianna Fáil councillor Niall Kelleher jointly brought the deputation.

Killarney Celtic chairperson Paul Sherry and vice-chairperson Tim Jones spoke to councillors at the online meeting.

Mr Sherry said anti-social behaviour at the grounds is an issue, however, there have been a number of other incidences of damage and trespassing.

He said it's become a sport for non-members in the area to run along the apex of the clubhouse and someone will get hurt if this continues.

Mr Sherry added it's more of a case than just securing the area with extra fencing and suggested using an area between the soccer club and Legion GAA to provide a common green area for local children.

Tim Jones added that criminal damage is an issue, saying ten goalposts have been damaged since the pandemic began.

Cathaoirleach of the MD Brendan Cronin said gardaí told him the issue of anti-social behaviour in the area is a “ticking time bomb”.

In response, Kerry County Council said a tender has been put out to erect a fence in the area, but acknowledged it's a short-term fix.

In the long term, the council said there's a need to formulate a plan, with the input of the community and sports clubs.
