Kerry’s copper telephone and broadband network is to be switched off.
The European Commission has proposed 2030 as the latest date for the decommissioning of Ireland's legacy copper network, which underpinned landline telephone and early internet services for decades.
No dates have been announced for the so-called “copper switch-off” across the country yet.
However, the CEO of National Broadband Ireland (NBI), TJ Malone, expects the phase-out to begin in the next twelve to 18 months.
The copper network is being replaced by a fibre one, as is being rolled out via the National Broadband Plan in rural areas (NBP).
Mr Malone says over 28,000 locations in Kerry will be on the NBI network in Kerry by the time it finishes in Glencar in early November:
